Popcorn and Pencils Tutorial - Saving Private Ryan

Synopsis:

This movie is set during, and the days after D-Day.  It follows the story of Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) and is squadron, their survival of D-Day, and their new assignment to save a private named James Ryan.
The film starts off in the landing craft just off the beaches of Normandy.  It is cold, wet, and the men are all terrified.  Orders are given, the doors open, and the events of D-Day begin.  After the events of D-Day have ceased, it is discovered that 3 of 4 Ryan brothers have been killed, and the order to find the 4th brother, James Ryan, have been given to Captain Miller and his team of men.  They set off through the French countryside, losing a few men along the way, and locate Ryan.  He refuses to leave his post and platoon until reinforcements arrive.  Miller decides to he and his men will stay and help Ryan defend his objective until the reinforcements arrive.  By the time they arrive, the men have been nearly overrun by the enemy.  Miller has kept Ryan safe, but at the cost of his own life.  The movie ends with Ryan as an old man, at the grave of Miller, stating that he hopes he has earned his life over the lost lives trying to save him.

Metaphors / Symbols:

There are many symbols used throughout the film, but the most evident and recurring one is the shaking hand of Captain Miller.  His shaking hand symbolizes his humanity, and fear of the war.  War veterans are scene as heroes, above the rest of us, but the shaking of the hand shows that he is no different then you or me.

Segway:

The best segway used in this film would be right at the end.  The scene is of private Ryan looking upon the just past Captain Miller, the man who saved his live. As the camera the pauses in that position, face of Ryan transforms into his face as an old man, looking upon the grave of Captain Miller.
